A July List
Complaints, sarcasm, and the things I distracted myself with this month
July continues to kick my ass, so you get a very random post this month. Let’s be real, most of y’all are too busy to pay attention to what I’m doing over here anyway, right? Americans have just a feeeew things pulling at their attention right now. No big deal.
Fire season is in full swing. I hate it. Biggest downside to living in this part of the country by far. The sun glows red, my eyes burn, and I wish I knew a spell for rain that worked.
Makes for some interesting sunsets though.
I’m nothing if not a dissociation girlie though, so I’ve been keeping myself as distracted as possible. I think that’s healthy. Isn’t that what they say? Here’s some things I’ve distracted myself with lately.
I’ve been totally enraptured by Disturbed’s version of The Sound of Silence ever since I first heard it a few years ago. I listened to it again recently and fell down the rabbit hole of “reaction vids” on YouTube. So I heard it about eleven times while I watched various people talk about how cool it was and I still didn’t get tired of it. Nothing like people praising your faves.
Jacob Collier, you magical little musical genius! I know he’s been a Big Deal for a long time apparently, but I just discovered him in this month, or maybe last month? Particularly can’t stop watching this video of him, Laufey, and Dodie singing Wild Mountain Thyme with the National Symphony Orchestra. The slow build of the song, and the way he can turn the audience into a choir gets me every single time. I also enjoyed this reaction vid. Watching Jacob Collier make men cry is a new fave pastime of mine.
Been rewatching Supernatural (2005) on Netflix. Ten years ago, falling in love with that show literally changed my life. (I’m going to start sharing about that saga this fall or winter) Watching it again is like coming home. A very violent, gory, ridiculous home. Have you seen Jensen Ackles though? 10/10 would recommend. (Jensen Ackles, not the show. That I would only recommend to specific people)

Thrillers involving true crime podcasts have been all the rage lately. I’ve listened to at least four of them recently. My favorite so far has been Listen for the Lie by Amy Tintera. I liked that it was done not from the perspective of someone doing the podcast, but from someone who is a suspect in the murder. She’s also deliciously wicked. The book made me laugh quite a bit, which is a rarity in this genre, so I liked that too. I recommend listening to this one if you can, since they have it narrated like you’re actually listening to the podcast episodes, etc. And of course, always look up possible triggers if that’s an issue for you, as these types of books tend to deal with a lot of heavy subject matter.
OBSESSED with The Prospects by Kt Hoffman. This book!! I am metaphorically clutching it to my chest at all times. It’s my favorite book I’ve read so far this year. It’s baseball! It’s transgender joy! It’s about hope, and what you really want, and letting yourself dream big. As I wrote in my reading journal afterwards, “It makes me believe in a world that’s just a bit better than ours, to see what could be possible, and my god we need that right now.”
I leave you with this hastily taken picture of my new pants. They make me feel like a rich eccentric wiling away their twilight years, a vibe I am 100% here for.

Sophie. Jacob Collier. The pants. I look forward to learning more about Supernatural because that took me by complete surprise. Miss you. Grateful for you.
This post was EVERYTHING. Seriously. Made me laugh and just made me happy that you exist in this world. Your sarcasm and wit breathes life into my soul!
